A DIFFERENT KIND OF TRAINING

Become the yoga teacher you wish you’d had.

You do not need to arrive knowing every pose, Sanskrit name or philosophical text. You do need curiosity, a consistent practice and the willingness to learn.

Strong & Steady is designed to take you from committed practitioner to capable beginner teacher. You will learn how to plan classes, communicate clearly, adapt for different people and make decisions without hiding behind rigid rules.

We will study yoga seriously — its practices, history, philosophy and teaching traditions — while also asking what anatomy, physiology, pain science and modern movement research can add.

The goal is not to make you teach like me. It is to help you understand what you are doing well enough to teach like yourself.

BY THE END OF THE TRAINING

You should be able to walk into a room and teach.

01

Plan intelligent classes

Build coherent sequences around a clear intention instead of copying someone else’s flow.

02

Cue with clarity

Use language that helps students explore movement without fear-based rules or unnecessary jargon.

03

Understand bodies

Apply anatomy and physiology to real people, including variation, pain, loading, mobility and strength.

04

Adapt in real time

Offer useful options for different bodies, abilities, injuries, energy levels and experience.

05

Teach yoga, not just poses

Bring breath, attention, meditation, history and philosophy into your teaching with thought and context.

06

Start building a career

Understand the practical side of finding work, pricing, professionalism, scope of practice and retaining students.

PROPOSED 2027–28 CALENDAR

Immersive enough to go deep.
Spacious enough to integrate.

We start with a substantial opening intensive, then meet for four weekends across the following months before finishing with a seven-day closing intensive.

WEEKEND 01

16–17 October 2027

Teaching skills, movement principles, observation and feedback.

WEEKEND 02

13–14 November 2027

Sequencing, adapting, anatomy in context and teaching practice.

WEEKEND 03

4–5 December 2027

Breath, nervous system, philosophy, meditation and class development.

WEEKEND 04

15–16 January 2028

Professional skills, practice teaching, refinement and assessment preparation.

200-hour programme

These dates are provisional. The current draft timetable combines approximately 168 scheduled in-person instructional hours with approximately 32 hours of guided study, observation, preparation and practicum work. The exact contact-hour structure may be refined as accreditation decisions are finalised.

WHAT YOU’LL STUDY

A curriculum built for teaching in the real world.

No endless anatomy lists. No single memorised sequence. No pretending there is one universally “correct” alignment for every body.

01

Asana & movement

  • Major pose families and their movement demands
  • Key joints: spine, shoulder, hip, knee, ankle and wrist
  • Mobility, strength, balance, loading and progression
  • Anatomical variation and why people move differently
  • Adapting poses instead of forcing bodies into shapes
02

Anatomy & physiology

  • Musculoskeletal anatomy you can actually use
  • Nervous system and autonomic physiology
  • Breathing physiology
  • Exercise, recovery, stress and adaptation
  • Pain science, injury myths and evidence-informed teaching
03

Teaching methodology

  • Sequencing from first principles
  • Clear, useful verbal cueing
  • Demonstration, observation and feedback
  • Class pacing, music, room management and presence
  • How to teach beginners, mixed levels and stronger groups
04

Yoga beyond asana

  • Key moments in yoga history
  • Major philosophical ideas and texts
  • Pranayama and breathing practices
  • Meditation and attention practices
  • How to teach this material without pretending certainty
05

Practice teaching

  • Teaching begins early, not at the end
  • Short drills, small-group teaching and full classes
  • Structured peer and faculty feedback
  • Observation of experienced teachers
  • Final assessed teaching practicum
06

The business of teaching

  • Finding your first teaching work
  • Studios, gyms, privates, workshops and online teaching
  • Pricing, boundaries and professionalism
  • Marketing without becoming unbearably salesy
  • Building a sustainable teaching career
TEACH
THE THING THAT MATTERS MOST

You will teach. A lot.

It is possible to know a surprising amount about yoga and still feel terrified when twenty people look at you waiting for the class to begin.

Confidence comes from doing the thing. Throughout Strong & Steady, you will practise cueing, explaining, demonstrating, observing, adapting and teaching — first in small pieces, then in longer sequences, then in complete classes.

You will receive specific feedback and then get another chance to try. The intention is that your first public class after graduation is not your first real teaching experience.

OUR APPROACH

Curiosity over certainty.

Yoga contains extraordinary practices and ideas. It also contains claims that deserve questioning.

We will explore yoga’s history and philosophy seriously, but you will never be asked to believe something simply because a teacher, lineage or textbook says so.

Likewise, science does not hand us permanent truths. We will learn how to interpret evidence, recognise uncertainty and update our thinking when better information comes along.

That is what evidence-informed teaching means here: not replacing yoga with science, but becoming better at deciding what we know, what we do not know, and what is useful to the person in front of us.

LEAD TEACHER

Matthew Huy

Yoga educator · Exercise scientist · Co-author of The Physiology of Yoga

Matthew has taught yoga for more than 20 years and holds a Master’s degree in Exercise Science. His work focuses on making anatomy, physiology, pain science and movement research useful to yoga teachers without turning teaching into a biology lecture.

He co-authored The Physiology of Yoga and has taught students, teachers and teacher trainees in studios, workshops, retreats and online education.

Expect detailed explanations, practical experiments, thoughtful debate, plenty of teaching practice and very little interest in dogma.

IS THIS FOR YOU?

You do not have to feel “ready.”

You do need enough experience of yoga to know you want to go deeper.

This training is likely a good fit if…

  • You have a regular yoga practice and want to understand it more deeply.
  • You are considering teaching, even if the idea still feels intimidating.
  • You want anatomy and science without losing the wider context of yoga.
  • You like asking “why?” rather than simply accepting rules.
  • You want a lot of practical experience and useful feedback.
  • You want to become adaptable rather than memorise one perfect class.

It may not be the right fit if…

  • You want a very short intensive purely to obtain a certificate.
  • You want one “correct” alignment system that applies to everyone.
  • You are uncomfortable having your assumptions challenged.
  • You want to avoid practice teaching until the very end.
  • You are looking for a training based primarily on one lineage or guru.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions.

Do I need to want to become a yoga teacher?

No. The training is built to prepare you to teach, but it will also suit committed practitioners who want a much deeper understanding of yoga. You should, however, be comfortable with the fact that teaching practice is a substantial part of the programme.

How experienced do I need to be?

We are currently planning around a guideline of roughly two years of regular yoga practice. You do not need an advanced asana practice, and being able to perform difficult poses is not an entry requirement. Consistency, curiosity and willingness to learn matter more.

Where will the training take place?

The training is planned for Marlow, Buckinghamshire. The exact venue will be confirmed before bookings are finalised.

Is the course accredited?

The accreditation route is still being finalised. The programme is being designed as a rigorous 200-hour foundational teacher training, but we will not claim a specific accrediting body until that decision and approval process are complete.

What if I miss a training day?

Attendance matters because practical teaching and feedback cannot simply be replaced by reading notes. For genuine exceptional circumstances, we will agree reasonable make-up work where possible. If a significant amount of contact time is missed, completing the qualification may need to be deferred and finished with a future cohort.

What is the cancellation policy?

Full cancellation, refund and transfer terms will be provided before booking opens and before you make a payment.

Will there be homework?

Yes. The 200 hours include guided reading, observation, class planning, practice, reflection and preparation between in-person modules. The intention is useful integration, not busywork.

Will I actually be ready to teach afterwards?

That is the standard we are designing towards. No training can remove every first-class nerve, but you will have practised teaching repeatedly, received feedback and completed a final practicum before graduation.
